We have been helping these victims as much as we can for the past few days. They can’t get out of the situations we see. Most of their homes were completely destroyed. And the rest, if they weren’t destroyed completely were very bad. So they have to live in this bad place with lots of difficulties.
The homeless have to gather at public places, such as monasteries and schools. But then, the refugees are allowed to stay at these public places only for a limited period of time. Since they are homeless, where else can they live if they are asked to move from these places? We can do nothing but feel sorry for them. Among them, the aged, children, sick people, and pregnant women suffered more. I was wondering, if I were one of these refugees, would I be able to deal with this trouble?
Because of the storm, some coastal regions are flooded. Many houses were destroyed and many people became homeless. Many also died. Some entire families died. I think to myself, after having seen the photos and the scenes, "We’re so much luckier than these people in every respect." That thought has become a drive for me in making an all-out effort to help the victims.
U Aung Myint (Nargis refugee)
I have 7 family members. We lived in a small hut, the floor and walls were made of bamboo. It was completely destroyed by the storm and violent wind. All the goods we used to sell were gone with the storm.
From the 3rd of May I received some cooking oil, rice and noodles. Then the crew from Gitameit delivered rice, medicine, soap, potatoes, noodles, clothes, and candles. Our family has to depend entirely on these donors to survive. And we still need the materials to rebuild our hut.
